Compare The 2017 CR-V & 2017 Subaru Forester

There's a lot of buzz about two new crossover SUVs that are just now hitting the market. Subaru fires a shot across the bow of other automakers with the release of its all-new, redesigned 2017 Forester 2.0XT. Honda counters with the unveiling of the revamped 2017 CR-V. Both are worthy competitors for today's savvy car shoppers. Each of these popular small SUVs offers its own unique style and versatility.

But when you put the Forester and CR-V side-by-side, which vehicle gives consumers more of what they are looking for? To find out, we'll compare the 2017 Subaru Forester 2.0 XT Touring with the 2017 Honda CR-V Touring by examining several key areas. Which crossover will come out on top? Let's find out.

Exterior Styling.

The new 2017 Subaru Forester 2.0 XT Touring rolls into the automotive spotlight wearing a dramatic new look that is athletic yet aggressive, yet sophisticated. A new black mesh grille, bold lower front fascia with distinctive vertical air dams, and innovative new "steering responsive" headlights framed by "C"-shaped LED daytime running lights give the Forester a unique look all its own. Unlike the CR-V, the Subaru's headlights swivel in the direction of travel when you turn the wheel to enhance visibility on curves.

The CR-V features a new look as well. Most notably, the CR-V's rear end now features thin horizontal taillights which replace its signature vertical taillights.

Subaru's Sporty New Interior

On the inside, Subaru ups its game considerably by giving the Forester a spacious new interior that's sportier and more luxurious than ever. The Forester's cabin is awash in premium materials, such as available leather seats and wood-trimmed accents. You'll find a 10-way power adjustable, heated driver's seat with memory presets, compared to the CR-V's 8-way power seats.

The Forester's instrumentation and controls are intuitive and straightforward to use. The instrument cluster features large, easy-to-read analog gauges. The CR-V, on the other hand, gets experimental with a layout that features a digital speedometer and curving horizontal tachometer that may take some getting used to.

Regarding interior volume and how it's used, the 2017 Subaru Forester continues to lead the way. While Honda has yet to release specifics about the new CR-V's interior dimensions as of this writing, automotive pundits and industry watchers speculate that the CR-V's interior volume will be similar to the 2016 model. That being the case, then the Forester will continue to offer more cargo space and interior volume than its competitor.

Technology Upgrades

Both the Subaru Forester and Honda CR-V duke it out regarding technology, with each offering a similar complement of infotainment functions. The 2017 Forester's Subaru STARLINK™ Multimedia Suite compares favorably to the CR-V. STARLINK allows you to access many of the same functions you'll find on your Apple or Android-compatible smartphone. You can dial up your favorite playlists and hear them through the Forester's audiophile-quality, 576-watt Harman Kardon 8-speaker premium audio system. Plus STARLINK Apps run the gamut, keeping you connected to your favorite social media sites and more.

You'll find that both the Forester and CR-V offer SiriusXM® Satellite Radio, streaming audio such as Pandora®, Bluetooth® hands-free calling, and turn-by-turn navigation.

Subaru's More Powerful Turbo

Honda has been stirring up a lot of press with the debut of its new 190-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. While turbocharging is a first for the CR-V, the 2017 Subaru Forester 2.0XT simply blows the doors off the 2017 CR-V with its more powerful and responsive 250-horsepower BOXER® Direct-Injection turbocharged 4-cylinder engine.

Subaru's mill is superior in every respect to the CR-V's turbo. Not only does it pump out more horsepower and torque, but its unique horizontally opposed "flat-four" design is more fuel efficient. Additionally, the BOXER engine's low center of gravity compared to traditional inline engines helps to improve handling characteristics. Moreover, when paired with the available Lineartronic® CVT, you'll find that the Subaru achieves up to an EPA-estimated 32 mpg* on the highway.

Legendary Subaru All-Wheel Drive

Speaking of handling, another big win for the Forester is its legendary Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive with X-MODE™. While the 2017 CR-V does offer AWD as a pricey option, nothing compares to Subaru's superlative, standard All-Wheel-Drive capabilities that put the Forester in a class by itself.

The system provides optimal power distribution to the wheels that need the most traction and power, automatically adjusts engine response, braking, and traction to maximize control on slippery surfaces and while going uphill. Hill Descent Control maintains the Foresters rock-steady handling when going downhill.

Add to this Subaru's standard Vehicle Dynamics Control and a class-leading 8.7 inches of ground clearance, and the go-anywhere Forester will leave the CR-V spinning its wheels. It's simply the better choice for making quick work of those frigid New Jersey winters.
